Nanotecnología al rescate del agua: innovación en la degradación de colorantes

La contaminación del agua por colorantes de la industria textil es una grave amenaza ambiental y para la salud, porque estos compuestos son persistentes, tóxicos y difíciles de degradar. Esto afecta la biodiversidad y dificulta el acceso a agua limpia, especialmente en comunidades vulnerables. Se han utilizado membranas de filtración para enfrentar el problema, pero las membranas tradicionales suelen taparse rápidamente y duran poco. Ahora, la nanotecnología (manipulación de la materia a escala nanométrica, es decir, extremadamente pequeña) surge como una alternativa prometedora. Al integrarla en membranas poliméricas (hechas de materiales plásticos), se mejora la eficiencia y la selectividad de filtrado (capacidad de retener contaminantes específicos). Además, estas membranas adquieren propiedades antimicrobianas y se vuelven más duraderas. Materiales como nanopartículas metálicas, óxidos metálicos y nanomateriales de carbono permiten crear membranas “inteligentes” capaces de degradar los colorantes y eliminar microbios. Investigadores de CIDETEQ están desarrollando estas membranas avanzadas para lograr un tratamiento del agua contaminada más sostenible, accesible y eficaz, en beneficio del medio ambiente y la salud de las personas.
